In the absence of insulin, the cells do not have enough biochemical energy so they must use other nutrients in order to function. Insulin is a vital hormone that controls how cells and tissues absorb energy as well as the breakdown of fats and proteins. Clusters of cells in the pancreas called islets secrete this hormone. Insulin, hormone that regulates the level of sugar ( glucose) in the blood and that is produced by the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. Insulin is secreted when the level of blood glucose rises—as after a meal. When the level of blood glucose falls, secretion of insulin stops, and the liver releases glucose into the blood.

The cell biology of systemic insulin function Insulin is the paramount anabolic hormone, promoting carbon energy deposition in the body. Its synthesis, quality control, delivery, and action are exquisitely regulated by highly orchestrated intracellular mechanisms in different organs or "stations" of its bodily journey. Insulin helps control blood glucose levels by signaling the liver and muscle and fat cells to take in glucose from the blood. Insulin therefore helps cells to take in glucose to be used for energy. If the body has sufficient energy, insulin signals the liver to take up glucose and store it as glycogen.
